Future of Transport

In our Future of Transport research section we consider technological and behavioural developments that will change the way we move around in the future.

As electric vehicles move down the cost curve and grab market share the transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles is now assured within the next 20 years. The dismantling of the infrastructure created for petrol vehicles, and maintained for more than 100 years, will create disruption in the short term.

Significant progress is also being made with autonomous vehicles and this technology will impact sectors like agriculture, logistics, shipping and public transport long before personal vehicles.

Interesting new transportation technology like Hyperloop, drone delivery systems and supersonic travel in low Earth orbit all offer optimism for sustainable, fast and safe transportation in the future which will improve mobility and drive economic development.
